2026 Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Amphibians have been anything but new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this trend, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming looks uniquely powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.
When these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
