Government Reject National Probe into Birmingham Bar Attacks

Authorities have ruled out establishing a national investigation into the Provisional IRA's 1974-era Birmingham pub attacks.

This Devastating Incident

On 21 November 1974, twenty-one civilians were killed and 220 wounded when explosive devices were exploded at the Mulberry Bush and Tavern in the Town pub establishments in Birmingham, in an assault commonly accepted to have been orchestrated by the IRA.

Judicial Aftermath

Not a single person has been found guilty over the bombings. Back in 1991, 6 individuals had their guilty verdicts overturned after spending over 16 years in jail in what is considered one of the most severe errors of the legal system in British history.

Families Campaign for Justice

Relatives have for years pushed for a public probe into the attacks to find out what the government knew at the moment of the tragedy and why nobody has been prosecuted.

Government Response

The security minister, Dan Jarvis, said on Thursday that while he had sincere empathy for the loved ones, the administration had determined “after thorough consideration” it would not authorize an inquiry.

Jarvis said the authorities believes the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery, created to look into deaths associated with the Northern Ireland conflict, could investigate the Birmingham attacks.

Campaigners Express Disappointment

Campaigner Julie Hambleton, whose teenage sister Maxine was lost her life in the explosions, commented the announcement showed “the government show no concern”.

The sixty-two-year-old has long fought for a open inquiry and explained she and other grieving families had “no plan” of engaging in the new body.

“We see no real impartiality in the commission,” she stated, adding it was “tantamount to them grading their own work”.

Requests for Document Release

For years, bereaved loved ones have been demanding the disclosure of documents from government bodies on the incident – especially on what the government was aware of prior to and after the attack, and what evidence there is that could result in arrests.

“The entire British establishment is against our relatives from ever discovering the facts,” she said. “Exclusively a official judge-directed national inquiry will grant us entry to the documents they claim they lack.”

Official Authority

A legally mandated open inquiry has specific official powers, encompassing the ability to compel witnesses to attend and disclose evidence connected to the probe.

Previous Investigation

An hearing in 2019 – secured by grieving relatives – ruled the victims were murdered by the IRA but did not determine the names of those responsible.

Hambleton commented: “The security services advised the presiding official that they have no files or information on what continues to be England’s longest open mass murder of the last century, but currently they want to pressure us to participate of this new commission to share evidence that they state has never been available”.

Official Reaction

Liam Byrne, the Member of Parliament for the local constituency, labeled the cabinet's ruling as “extremely disheartening”.

Through a statement on social media, Byrne said: “Following such a long period, so much pain, and countless disappointments” the relatives deserve a mechanism that is “independent, judge-led, with full capabilities and unafraid in the pursuit for the truth.”

Ongoing Grief

Speaking of the family’s enduring grief, Hambleton, who heads the advocacy organization, stated: “No family of any atrocity of any type will ever have peace. It is unattainable. The suffering and the grief persist.”
